(1) 최문순과 아스파라거스

“아스파라거스를 단숨에 다 팔아 주셨습니다. 재배 농가들의 감사 인사를 대신 전해 올립니다. 수출 물량을 국내에서 소비할 수 있게 됐습니다. 모두 맛있게 드시기 바랍니다. 다음 판매는 23일, 목요일이라고 합니다. 감자합니다.”

강원도지사 최문순이 아스파라거스 장사에 나섰다. 얼마 전 감자 장사로 재미 보시더니, 으하하. 요즘 빌빌거리며 기운 없을 김진태도 좀 사다 드시면 좋겠다. 하여간 기념으로 아스파라거스 얘기를 들려드립니다.

(2) 아프로디테와 아스파라거스

고대 그리스인들은 아스파라거스가 여신 아프로디테와 모종의 관계가 있다고 믿었다. 아프로디테가 누구신가. 사랑과 정염, 다산과 풍요의 여신 아니신가.

그리스인들은 또한 아스파라거스를 회춘의 식품으로 여겼다. 그러니까 욕망과 정력의 상징이었는데, 특히 생김새도 그렇지만, 성장이 워낙 빨라 순식간에 커지는.... 음, 이하 생략. 애들은 가라.

(3) 프레야와 아스파라거스

프레야는 아프로디테의 캐릭터와 역할이 겹치는 북유럽의 여신이다. 사람들은 그녀를 위해 돼지를 잡곤 했는데 그때마다 아스파라거스도 반드시 준비했다. 그리하여 아스파라거스는 북유럽 특히 게르만 지역에서 오랜 세월 종교적 의미가 담긴 의식용 음식(ceremonial food)이었다.

(4) 여왕과 아스파라거스

고대 이집트인들은 아스파라거스를 신성시하여 종교의식에 사용했다. 아스파라거스는 수천년 전의 벽 부조에서도 발견된다. 피라미드에서 발굴한 그릇에서도 그 식물의 그림을 볼 수 있다. 어떤 여왕(Queen Nefertiti)은 아스파라거스라면 아주 환장했다고 한다.

(5) 수도사들과 아스파라거스

프랑스의 수도사들은 수백년 전 수도원의 정원에 아스파라거스를 심기 시작했다. 태양왕 루이 16세에게 아부하는 용도로도 사용했다는 얘기가 있다.

여기서도 좋디야. 자세히는 얘기 못 해드려. 하여간 많이들 잡숴. Asparagus enhances the sexual urge, energy and vigour.

그리스

Ancient Greeks harvested wild asparagus and connected this vegetable to their goddess of love, Aphrodite. Much of the aura of asparagus concerns its reputation as a rejuvenating aphrodisiac. The fast-growing, phallic shoots will increase sexual desire and potency.

북유럽

In northern Europe asparagus season is a very special time of year. Easter and Pentecost (Whitsuntide), which are celebrated as joyously as is Christmas, would not be complete without a dish of buttered asparagus. On certain special occasions, Germanic tribes sacrificed a pig or a wild boar for Freyr.

고대 이집트

For the ancient Egyptians asparagus was a sacred food; for this reason they included it in offerings to the gods. The asparagus plant appeared in an Egyptian frieze about five thousand years ago, with Queen Nefertiti allegedly an asparagus fan. Archaeologists found traces of asparagus on dishware when excavating the Pyramid of Sakkara, along with other coveted foods such as figs and melons.

프랑스 수도원

French monasteries included this plant in their gardens 600 years ago – and, if you wanted to please the Sun King, Louis XIV, you could bring his second wife, Madame de Maintenon, a new asparagus recipe. She gathered them into a book and asparagus soup a la Maintenon is still prized today.
