Five Korean Media Organizations Host a Joint Press Conference in Support of Democratization of Myanmar in front of the Embassy of Myanmar, at 10:30am on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.

1. We would like to express our gratitude for your effort in ensuring the people’s right to knowledge as well as fair and balanced reporting.

2. The Korea Foundation for Press Freedom, the Korean Unionized Media Workers’ Forum, the Donga Struggle Committee for Free Press, the Chosun Struggle Committee for Free Press, and the Association of National Journalists Resisting against 5.17 Coup d'e'tat are holding a joint press conference in front of the Embassy of Myanmar at 10:30am on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 in support of democratization of Myanmar. We will also release a statement condemning the Myanmar military for brutally persecuting the people of Myanmar and violating freedom of press.

3. We would like to invite you to the press conference, with a brief introduction of the five Korean media organizations that have made a long and sustained effort in fighting for democratization and freedom of press in South Korea as follows:

The Korea Foundation for Press Freedom was organized in August 2014 in the spirit of the Declaration of Freedom of Press, which was first issued in 1974. The aim of the foundation is to contribute to fair and balanced journalism in South Korea by engaging in media activism for fair and balanced reporting. Lee buyoung is the current chair of the foundation.

The Donga Struggle Committee for Free Press was founded by a group of journalists who were forcibly laid off from Donga Ilbo on March 17, 1975, for declaring freedom of press on October 24, 1974, and engaging in media activism against Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorship. The committee has made a long and sustained effort in fighting for freedom of press for over forty-six years. Heo yook is the current chair of the committee.

The Chosun Struggle Committee for Free Press was founded by a group of journalists who were forcibly laid off from Chosun Ilbo on March 21, 1975, for declaring freedom of press on October 24, 1974, and engaging in media activism against Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorship. The committee has made a long and sustained effort in fighting for freedom of press for over forty-six years. Sung hanpyo is the current chair of the committee.

The Association of National Journalists Resisting against 5.17 Coup d'e'tat was organized by journalists who were forcibly laid off around the time of Gwangju Uprising in May 1980 for going on strike to resist media censorship imposed by Chun Doo-hwan’s authoritarian regime. The association has made a long and sustained effort in fighting for freedom of press for over forty-one years. The association is co-headed by Kim Junebalm, Ryu sooklyol, Hyun leesup, and Ko seungwoo.

The Korean Unionized Media Workers’ Forum was formed on November 24, 1997, consisting of the former core members of the National Union of Media Workers, which was organized on November 24, 1988. The forum has been providing support for media activism as well as fight for freedom of press across the nation for over twenty-four years. Ahn kisuk is the current chair of the committee.
