“Ook! Ook! Ook!” 아프리카 콩고의 밀림에서 웬 괴수의 소리가 들린다. 무슨 소리지? 귀 나쁜 사람은 윤석열의 “응? 응?” 소리로 오해한다.

호기심 많고 눈 좋은 사람이 소리나는 쪽으로 가본다. 얼러리? 웬 오랑우탄 닮은 짐승이 보인다. 놈은 미친 원숭이처럼 날뛰고 있다.

사람은 궁금증을 참지 못해 물어본다. “왜 소리 지르고 날뛰는 겨?” 놈은 질문자를 쿨하게 째려보더니 쿨하게 대답한다. “보스는 말여, 나와바리 지키려면 이렇게 지랄해야 되걸랑?” 무섭다.

얼러리? 주변을 둘러보니 놈의 똘마니들이 여럿이다. 한둘 아니다. 조폭같다. “조져!” 보스의 명령이 떨어진다. 그러고보니 똘마니들의 손에는 이미 돌망치, 날카로운 작대기 등 연장이 들려 있다. 땅바닥에 있단 짱돌을 들어 던지려는 놈도 있다.

놈들은 밀림의 약탈자다. 별명이 ‘해적들’이다. (이 별명이 붙은 사연은 ‘부록’에 나온다.)

다행히 놈들은 멸종 위기에 놓여있다. 사라져 가는 놈들이다. 사람들아, 그러나 방심하지 말라. 놈들은 훗날에도 어딘가에 숨어 악을 도모할 것이다.

날뛰는 괴수들

나와바리 지키려 원숭이지랄. The Haiit is a type of cryptid. They were reported screaming violently and jumping on random objects to show their dominance.

놈들의 연장

돌망치, 날카로운 막대기. 짱돌도 던진다. They've been seen with tools like a sharpened stick or a hammer stone, although this is not unknown amongst the great ape species. They have been seen throwing rocks.

별명, 목격담

해적들, 약탈자들. The natives called them pirates. “The latest sighting was when a man riding in his boat to go check some lines when he heard random screaming. He stopped to see the ruckus and a random ape jumped in his boat and threw things off and jumped back in the trees. The natives called them pirates for these reasons.”

멸종 위기

The cryptid is rarely seen. Although rarely seen doesn't mean they're not heard.

생김새, 발가락

오랑우탄 비슷. 발가락이 세 개. They have flat faces like an orangutan. They had three short toes, which are good for higher mountain climates when compared to places like a coastal forest. (Their loss of two of their toes is a unique trait in comparison to known monkeys and great apes, whom all have kept all of their phalanges.)

서식지

콩고의 밀림. It is hard to locate due to the fact that the Congo is a dense forest.
