주 원내대표는 “국회가 추미애 법무부 장관이 얘기한 ‘통제받지 않는 폭주 기관차’가 돼 버렸다”며 “이 폭주 열차가 세월호만큼 엉성하다”고 현 국회 상황을 세월호에 비유했다. (한겨레신문 2020.07.01.)

세월호 희생자들에 대해 막말을 해대고 모욕을 일삼는 사람들을 보면 무섭다. 그들은 슬픔, 안타까움, 연민 등 인간의 기본적 감정조차 없는 사람들 같다.

그들의 심장은 온기는커녕 냉기만 품고 있을 것이다. 그들의 심장은 얼음일 것이다. 그렇다면 괴물이다. 괴물이 별건가. 일말의 인간적 감정조차 없다면 그게 괴물이다.

그들은 어쩌다 괴물이 되었을까. 살다보니 괴물이 되었을까. 태어날 때부터 괴물이었을까. 오오, 그들은 어쩌다 얼음심장을 갖게 됐을까!

북미의 원주민들은 아래와 같은 얼음인간을 상상했다. 부록 보시라.

얼음심장 괴물

Kee-wakw or Giwakwa. 원래 사람이었으나 악령에 씌여, 식인 등의 죄를 지어 심장이 얼음으로 변한 괴물. 태어날 때부터 괴물이었다는 설도 있다. They were once human, but were transformed because their hearts turned to ice by some dreadful crime. Most legends describe them as former humans whose hearts turned to ice due to either possession by an evil spirit or commission of some dreadful crime, such as cannibalism or allowing a person to starve. Some legends claimed it wasn’t a transformed human, but a monster by birth.

얼음은 놈의 힘

놈의 몸뚱아리 안에 있는 얼음덩이는 힘의 원천. The ice chunks within them were the source of their power.

퇴치법

놈이 얼음을 토해내게 하시든지, 소금을 뿌려 놈을 녹여버리시든지. 이 과정을 통해 운 좋은 놈은 다시 사람이 되기도 한다. To defeat the kee-wakw, you had to make it vomit up the ice or dissolve the creature with salt. Sometimes, doing so would turn the kee-wakw back into the human they once were.

식성

cannibalistic.

생김새

반수반인. a giant, half-animal half-human creature. Their hairy bodies and savage behaviour are reminiscent of wendigos. (얼마전 wendigos 소개해드린 바 있음.)

서식처

They dwelled in woodlands and forests. the folklore of the Abenaki tribe of the north-eastern United States.
