아마존 일대에 ‘핑크 꼴통’이 산다. 보또라는 돌고래 괴물이다. 밤이 되면 놈의 꼴통짓이 시작된다. 멋진 사내놈으로 변신하여 핑크색 수트를 쫙 빼입는다. 그담에 하는 짓이 뭐냐, 물가로 나와 마을의 여인들을 유혹한다. “한번만 더, 한번만 더, 응응?” 핑크의 매력에 혹해 응응거리다 물속으로 끌려가는 멍청한 여인도 있다.

핑크 꼴통은 마을사람들의 파티장에도 나타나 여자를 임신시킨다. “한번만 더, 한번만 더, 응?” 핑크의 매력에 빠져 임신한 여자는 멍청하게 아무것도 기억하지 못한다. 이밖에도 놈의 악행은 한두가지가 아니다. 부록 보시라.

이런 악행에도 불구하고 핑크의 매력에 빠져 꼴통을 숭배하며 모시는 사람들이 있다. 그들은 꼴통과의 의리를 지켜야 한다고 믿는다. 실수로라도 놈을 죽이면 불운이 찾아온다고 굳게굳게 믿는다. 멍청하다.

보또

살껍데기 색깔이 핑크. The pink river dolphin retains a semi-mythical status throughout the Amazon Jungle, thanks to the colorful legends that have sprung up around it.

납치, 임신, 악몽

밤이 되면 놈은 쫙 빼입은 멋진놈으로 변신. 놈은 물가의 아마존 부락 여인들을 납치. 파티장에 나타나 가장 예쁜 여자를 임신시키곤 해 뜨기 전에 돌아가기도 한다. 임신녀는 종종 아무것도 기억하지 못한다. According to this legend, at night the dolphin morphs into a tall, handsome and elegantly-dressed man. The man, dressed all in white according to some versions and sometimes wearing a hat (to cover his blowhole), steps ashore and sets out to seduce the wives and daughters of the Amazonian villages. Some say he goes to local fiestas and charms the most beautiful girl at the party. He then impregnates the woman, before returning to the river when the sun comes up. In some versions, the woman remembers nothing about it — and then comes her unexpected pregnancy.

아마존 처녀들은 애를 베도 할 말이 있는데, “핑크 괴물의 짓”이라고 둘러대면 된다. 아마존 일부 지역에는 ‘보또의 애’라는 표현이 있다. The myth of the morphing river dolphin, a creature known as an encantado, has long been used – and still is used – in isolated parts of the Amazon as a cover story for unwanted or scandalous pregnancies, be they the result of a clandestine affair, an act of incest, or other illegal or dishonorable deed. In the Brazilian Amazon, a fatherless child is still often called a “child of the boto.”

끌려간 자는 돌아오지 못 한다혼자 수영하는 사람을 납치, 물속 세계로 끌고 갑니다. 끌려간 자는 결코 돌아올 수 없다네. The pink river dolphin, again sometimes in human form, will take lone swimmers – children and adults, men and women — to the mystical underwater world of Encante, from which they can never return. On the positive side, the sub-aquatic realm is often described as an Atlantis-like paradise, not too dissimilar to the real world but better in every way.

악몽

핑크 괴물은 ‘평생의 악몽’을 풀어놓는 존재이기도 하다. It will unleash a lifetime of nightmares, forever damning you to terrible dreams and nights of frightful dolphin-induced visions.

눈 마주치지 말자

누군가에게 “저기 괴물 있다!” 하고 소리치면 원주민들은 오히려 고개를 돌려버린다. 괴물과 눈이 마주치면 뭔가 절망적인 일이 생기기 때문이다. If you point out a nearby river dolphin to a local fisherman, don’t be surprised if they refuse to look. In some parts of the Amazon, making direct eye contact with a river dolphin is a perilous thing indeed.

떠받드는 사람들

핑크 괴물의 악행에도 불구하고 숭배하고 신성시하는 사람들이 있다네! 실수로라도 놈을 죽이면 불운이 찾아온다고 믿는다네! One of the reasons why the pink river dolphin has not yet reached endangered status is the reverence it commands in certain parts of the Amazon. It is considered a sacred creature by many indigenous Amazonians, and killing one, whether intentionally or by accident, is thought to bring a great deal of bad luck upon the killer. Even more bad luck will rain down upon anyone who eats a river dolphin.

이름

boto 혹은 boto cor-de rosa, delfín rosado, bufeo colorado 등. pink river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis). In Spanish it’s known as the delfín rosado, or in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru as the bufeo colorado. In the Brazilian Amazon, meanwhile, the name boto cor-de rosa (or just boto) is used for these charming but enigmatic dolphins.

특정색깔 무섬증

특정 색깔을 보면 기겁을 하는 포비아가 있는데.... 과거의 어떤 무섭거나 불쾌한 경험과 관련있는 경우가 많다. In most cases, the deep fear or hatred for certain colors can stem from classical conditioning. There are some colors which are just disagreeable. Old and moldy cheese for example has a pale sickly color associated with germs and disease, which may be associated in a negative manner.

11일 오전 대구 중구 서문시장을 39년째 지키고 있는 양말 도매상 김모(58)씨가 허탈한 목소리로 말했다. 분홍과 파랑은 각각 미래통합당과 더불어민주당의 상징색이다. 21대 총선의 지역구별 당선자를 표시한 지도는 온통 파랑으로 물들었지만, 대구ㆍ경북(TK)은 예외였다.

김씨도 통합당 후보를 찍었다. “대구도 바뀌어야 한다”는 생각이긴 했지만, 보수 전멸의 위기감 앞에서 흔들렸다고 했다. 인근에서 국수 노점을 하는 배상숙(70)씨도 거들었다. “대구는 무조건 통합당이지만, 어데 예뻐서 찍었겠나? 원체 비실비실하니까 우리라도 뽑아줘야 하지 않겠나 캐서 의리로 뭉쳤지.” (하략, 한국일보 2020.05.15.)
