“신천지 안에 매점이 있는데 웬만한 물건은 거기서 사야 합니다. 모자부터 양말, 속옷까지 다 있어요. ‘들어온 돈은 못 나가게 해야 한다’는 게 이만희 총회장의 지시라고 합니다.” (변상욱 인터뷰, 한국일보 2020.03.11)

신천지 매점에서 빤쓰까지 사야 하다니! 그뿐인가. 이만희 설교 CD도 사고 앨범도 사야 한단다. 탈출한 분들은 “강매 분위기가 있다”고 입을 모아 증언한다. 제사장이 되어 영생(永生)을 누리려면 빤쓰를 사야 한단 말이지.

(2) KKK의 사탕장사

KKK는 ‘순수한 이념 집단’이었을까. 리더그룹은 자신들의 '흑인증오 이념’을 전파하기 위해 헌신한 자들이었을까. 개뿔같은 얘기다. 순진하고 어리석은 오해에 불과하다.

KKK의 리더들 가운데는 돈에 환장한 자들이 적지 않았다. 그들은 내부의 조직원들에게 구질구질한 싸구려 잡동사니까지 팔아 큰돈을 챙겼다. 그들의 판매 물품은 허연 귀신옷을 비롯, 사탕 기념품 따위였다. 심지어 생명보험도 팔았다!

1920년대 인디애나 지역의 어떤 KKK 리더는 1년에 20만 달러를 땡겼다. 요즘 가치로 280만 달러(2015)에 이르는 거액이다.

의상 강매

생산비 2달러 짜리를 3배 이상의 가격에 판매. The Klan started selling hoods and robes in 1920. Once a new member joined, he was not allowed to make his own robes. KKK robes only came from KKK-approved factories. They cost $2.00 to produce, and they were initially sold to members for $6.50 (about $88 in 2015).

사탕부터 보험까지

귀신옷, 사탕, 기념품 따위를 조직원들에게 판매. 심지어 생명보험까지 판매. 강매 분위기. 이런 비즈니스는 KKK가 다단계 피라미드 조직이라 가능했다. The KKK pressured its members to purchase a lot of other racist-branded swag: life insurance, robe dry-cleaning services, helmets, Bibles, swords, and “even specially-wrapped candies with the Klan insignia on it.” (The 1920s KKK made a lot of money selling robes, memorabilia, candy, and life insurance policies to its own members. The Klan exclusively made money off its members. The Klan sold to the Klan, and the Klan alone.)

카탈로그 발행

1921년부터 대량생산 체제 갖추고 고급스런 올컬러 상품판매 카달로그 발행. By 1921, the Klan began mass producing the costume, even publishing a “sumptuous, full-color, mail-order” catalogue, Kinney reports.

돈벌이

땡긴 돈은 KKK 상층부의 리더들에게 직접 전달됐다. 인디애나 지역 KKK 리더의 경우 1년에 20만 달러를 챙겼다. 요즘 가치로 280만 달러(2015)에 이른다. The money went directly into the inner “Imperial” rung of the hierarchy. At a time when per capita income in the U.S. was under $700, the Indiana Klan leader pulled in about $200,000 annually. In 2015, that’s the equivalent of more than $2.8 million. For a time, the Klan leaders, even at the state level, were among the best paid men in America.

증오를 팔다

KKK 리더들은 인종주의 등을 이용해 돈벌이에 열중. ‘증오 비즈니스’라는 이름의 거대 암시장 형성. The KKK were tapping into a big market as by the 1920s. The leaders exploited pre-existing, popular racism to make money. They were very, very, very successful.
