북미의 하이다 족은 죽음을 두 가지로 나눈다. 하나는 ‘평화로운 죽음’이요 다른 하나는 ‘험한 죽음’이다.

하이다의 여신 티아는 ‘평화로운 죽음’을 관장한다. ‘평화로운 죽음’이란 어떤 것일까. 여러 가지가 있겠지만, 떠날 때를 미리 알면 좋지 않을까. 티아가 그 때를 알려준다.

세상이 만들어지고 있을 때, 까마귀가 인간을 위해 ‘험한 죽음 신’의 달님을 훔쳐 하늘에 두었다. 인간이 세상의 환경을 해치면 까마귀는 달님을 다시 ‘험한 죽음 신’에게로 가져갈 것이다. 또한 ‘험한 죽음 신’의 분노도 막아주지 않을 것이다.
