(1) 숨는 놈

인간 세상에는 몰래 숨어 나쁜짓 하는 놈들이 적지 않다. 귀신-괴물 세상에도 그런 놈들이 있다. 그중 대표적인 놈들을 소개한다. 주로 북미 동부의 산악 지역에 서식하는 ‘뒤에 숨는 놈’들이다. 이름도 하이드비하인드다. 허허, 뒤에(behind) 숨는(hide) 놈이라니.

놈들은 야행성으로, 어두운 숲의 나무 뒤에 몸을 숨긴다. 몸을 숨길 수 있는 건 슬림한 체형 덕분이다. 키는 5~6피트 그러니까 성인남성 정도 되는데, 키에 비해 무지하게 홀쭉하다. 굵기 25센티정도 밖에 안되는 나무 뒤에도 몸뚱아리를 숨길 수 있을 정도다.

놈들은 왜 숨나. 이익을 취하기 위해서다. 잡아먹을 벌목꾼들이 나타날 때까지 어둠 속에 숨어 하염없이 기다리는 것이다. 쫄쫄 굶으면서 최장 7년을 기다리기도 한다. 마침내 벌목꾼을 사냥하면 갈고리처럼 생긴 숭악한 발톱으로 배를 가르고 창자를 끄집어낸다. 만찬이 시작된다. 놈들은 살이나 다른 내장보다 창자를 특히 더 좋아한다.

놈들이 옆에 있는지 없는지 확인할 방법은 없을까. 있다. 놈들은 고약한 술냄새를 풍긴다. 얼마나 지독하냐. 사람들은 그 썩은 술냄새를 슬쩍 맡기만 해도 진저리치며 구역질을 하게 된다. 축농증 걸린 사람은 좀 덜 하려나.

“7년을 숨어 기다리니 등짝이 수목원 되는구먼....”

아참, 이 얘기 빼먹을 뻔했네. 놈들은 사냥에 성공하면 좋아 죽는다. 온몸 들썩거리며 웃는다. 근데 그 웃음소리가 소름 쫙쫙 끼친다. 동물학자들에 따르면 “놈의 웃음소리만 들어도 졸도 아니면 사망”이란다.

(2) 들킨 놈

귀신-괴물 세상에는 몰래 숨어 나쁜짓 하는 놈들이 적지 않다. 인간 세상에도 그런 놈들이 있다. 그중 대표적인 분들을 소개한다. 한국에 사는 몇몇 가짜군인들이다. 뒤에 숨어 나쁜짓 모의하는 분들이다.

왜 숨나. 계엄령같은 위험한 놀이는, 처음에는 원래 숨어서 하는 법이다. 그분들은 어둠의 베일 뒤에 숨어 계엄령을 만지작거리며 하염없이 기회를 기다렸을까. 마침내 기회가 오면 갈고리처럼 생긴 숭악한 발톱으로 국민의 배를 가르고 창자를 끄집어냈을까. 피의 만찬을 기대했을까. 폭탄주 나눠마실 그날을 기다렸을까.

몇 분 들키셨다. 전 국방장관 한민구님이 들키셨다. 님은 기무사 시켜 계엄관련 문건을 만드셨다. 지금 미국에 계신 전 기무사령관 조현천은 문건작성을 주도하셨다. 기무사 참모장 소장 소강원과 5처장 준장 기우진은 그 지시를 수행한 실무 책임자셨다. 소강원님은 계엄문건 작성 담당 태스크포스(TF)를 이끄신 분이고, 기우진님은 문건에 67쪽짜리 ‘대비계획 세부자료’을 만들어 첨부하신 분이다.

아직 어둠 속에 숨어계신 분들, 또 있다. 있어 보인다. 냄새가 심하게 난다. 당장 전 청와대 국가안보실장 김관진, 전 대통령권한대행 황교안, 전 대통령이자 현 감방독거노인 박근혜가 의심스럽다. 괜한 의심이 아니라 합리적 의심이다. 혹시 그 의심이 사실이라면 얼른 자수하시라. 자수하여 광명단 찾자. 꼭꼭 숨어도 머리카락 보인다.

광명단(光明丹)
납원자 3개, 산소원자 4개가 결합한 산화물의 일종. 옹기 제작용 유약으로도 사용하는데 뜨거워지면 납 성분이 흘러나와 인체에 유해. 요즘 별 사연 없으면 잘 사용하지 않음. 요즘 잘 안보이는데, 자수하면 찾을 수 있다.

뒤에 숨는 놈
The Hidebehind is a nocturnal fearsome critter from American folklore that preys upon humans that wander the woods, and was blamed for the disappearances of early loggers when they failed to return to camp.

다이어트에 실패한 놈

As its name suggests, the Hidebehind is noted for its ability to conceal itself. When an observer attempts to look directly at it, the creature hides again behind an object or the observer and therefore can't be directly seen: a feat it accomplishes by sucking in its stomach to a point where it is so slender that it can easily cover itself behind the trunk of any tree. The Hidebehind uses this ability to stalk human prey without being observed and to attack without warning. Their victims, including lumberjacks who frequent the forests, are dragged back to the creature's lair to be devoured. The creature subsists chiefly upon the intestines of its victim, and has a severe aversion to alcohol, which is considered a sufficient repellent.

“곰처럼 생겼슈. 길고 굵은 시커먼 털이 온몸을 덮구 있슈. 얼굴도 털루다 덮여 있어 제대로 뵈지두 않어유. 그렁께, 털 땜이 앞뒤 구별이 안될 정도유. 생긴 건 곰인디 꼬리는 또 개유. 프랑스 목양견(牧羊犬) 꼬리랑 비슷해유. 그런 눔이 직립보행을 하드라니께유. 무지하게 빠르고 민첩해유. 지 동생이 놈을 발견하곤 눈으로 쫓다가유, 놈이 너무 빨라 어지러워 쓰러진 적도 있슈.” 근데 목격자마다 하는 말이 좀 다르다. 하여간 Early accounts describe hidebehinds as large, powerful animals, despite the fact that no one was able to see them.

식성
The creature subsists chiefly upon the intestines of its victim. 논병아리라는 물새도 잡아먹는데 역시 창자부터..... Human and grebe intestines are the mainstay of a hidebehind’s diet.

웃음소리
Tales of the Hidebehind may have helped explain strange noises in the forest at night. a terrifying laugh. Sometimes the hidebehind’s peal of laughter is enough to scare prey to death before they are ripped open.

해리포터 출연
The Hidebehind has been featured and referenced in popular culture including games, novels, stories, and television. The Hidebehind is featured in the 2006 horror/suspense novel of the same name by Charles H. Snellings in which rafters on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho are stalked by one of the creatures. The creature appeared in Pecos Bill Catches a Hidebehind, where it is captured and donated to a zoo by the cowboy Pecos Bill.
Hidebehinds are mentioned in Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. In the series, they are described as being mostly small creatures with the fear they engender in those they stalk being a defense mechanism.
In 2016, the official Harry Potter themed newsite Pottermore by J. K. Rowling released a new story about the wizarding school Ilvermorny, which featured a Hidebehind. This "nocturnal, forest-dwelling spectre" preys on humanoid creatures, but a witch and Pukwudgie working together were able to defeat the creature.
The Hidebehind appeared in the Gravity Falls short "Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained: The Hide Behind".

유사종(동일종이라는 주장도 있음)
Bigfoot = a large, hairy, muscular, bipedal ape-like creature, roughly 6–9 feet (1.8–2.7 m), covered in hair described as black, dark brown, or dark reddish. The enormous footprints for which the creature is named are claimed to be as large as 24 inches (60 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) wide.
Sasquatch = a large, ape-like creature that lives primarily in the forests stretching from the West Coast of British Columbia to Northern California, and to a lesser extent throughout North America.
