파푸아뉴기니 하늘에는 비행괴물(飛行怪物)들이 날고 있다. 로펜이라는 괴물인데 이름의 뜻도 비행악마, 악마비행자다. 비행하는 놈들이니 조씨 성 가진 놈들이 틀림없다. 맞다, 조류다. 식인조다.

비행괴물들의 덩치는 참으로 거대하다. 반면 하는 짓은 참으로 비루하고 지저분하다. 너절하고 더럽다. 어떻게 지저분한가. 사람들의 무덤을 뒤져 먹이를 취한다. 썩은 인육을 처먹는다. 그래, 썩은 사람고기 처먹으니 좋더냐.

흥미로운 사실은 놈들이 자체발광을 한다는 점이다. 누구의 도움도 없이 스스로 빛이 난다. 한밤중에 놈이 비행하고 있으면 하늘아래 사람들이 다 알아볼 정도다. 자체발광, 이거 하나는 기특하다.

대한민국 하늘에 비행괴물, 항공괴물들이 날고 있다. 조괴물과 박괴물이다. 그 일족들의 비행(非行)과 비행(卑行)이 끝없이 터져나오고 있다. 비행의 내용이 참으로 비루하고 너절하다. 새삼 입에 올리고싶지도 않다. 다만, 사람을 잡기는 했으나 먹지는 않았으니 그거 하나는 기특하다.

지랄발광 1.

흥미로운 사실은 괴물들이 발광체가 되고 싶어한다는 점이다. 근데 제 몸뚱아리 자체발광이 아니라 아랫사람들 부려 빛나보겠다는 타체발광이다. 예를 들면, 박모는 빛나는 존재가 되기 위해 여승무원들을 선발해 찬양가를 부르게 한다.

지랄발광 2.

"회장님을 뵙는 날... 자꾸만 떨리는 마음에 밤잠을 설쳤었죠. 이제야 회장님께 감사하단 말 대신 한 송이 새빨간 장미를 두 손 모아 드려요. 새빨간 장미만큼 회장님 사랑해. 가슴이 터질 듯한 이 마음 아는지. 오늘은 회장님 모습이 아주 즐거워 보여요. 회장님 두 손에 담겨진 빨간 장미가 함께 웃네요." (부록에 동영상 링크!)

그래, 회장님아, 여승무원들이 사랑하고 가슴 터질 듯하다고 노래 불러주니 좋더냐. 빛나더냐. 허허, 발광(發光)은커녕 발광(發狂)이다. 미친 거다. 아서라 말어라.

"이 새 새끼덜이 덩치 크다고 또 지랄갑질 할라고 하네!"

비행괴물
로펜. Ropen=demon flyer. 사악한 식인조. 생선도 먹음. it lives on a diet of fish, though there have been some reports of the creature feasting on human flesh, especially from grave robbery. 원주민들은 조상귀신이라 여김. 왕덩치로 날개 펼치면 9미터. 거대 익룡 비슷. 숭악하게 생긴 이빨 자랑. 오밤중에 자체발광. Flying lights in Papua New Guinea have been reported by not only natives but by Western visitors. Evelyn Cheesman, an entomologist, mentions them in her book The Two Roads of Papua (published in 1935): "baffling" lights that lasted "about four or five seconds."

목격 사례
In 1944, former American fighter pilot Duane Hodgkinson was station in Papua New Guinea during World War II. As he and another military man were moving through thick vegetation, they heard a loud, startling sound. They came to a clearing and a creature made a few steps through the trail and took off. Duane was astonished at the time because according to him, it was a “pterodactyl.” It lad a long snout on it, a long appendage coming out the back of its head, and great, big wings.
In 1986, the location of a former military base in Papua New Guinea was also the sighting of a killing by the Ropen. A man was gardening, and the creature; a very large one evidently, came down and picked him up, flew to about 40 feet off the ground, dropped him, by the time he hit the ground he was either dead or incapacitated. The creature picks him back up, takes him up into a large tree, and eats him in front of the village.

연예-방송계 진출
By about 2010, the word ropen became better known in Western countries, especially in the USA, where a Destination Truth episode was broadcast in 2007 and the Monsterquest "Demon Flyer" episode (a.k.a. "Flying Monsters") was broadcast in 2009. By that time, "ropen" came to mean a modern pterosaur, although cryptozoologists who specialize in it—they use the word to mean extant Rhamphorhynchoid-like pterosaurs.
